Summer Trolling Update: High Catch Rates Nearshore in New York Waters
Lake Erie State Park - Chautauqua, NY
The walleye bite in the New York state waters of Lake Erie has been remarkably consistent this season. Fishunter Charters reports that schools are holding steady in the 40 to 60-foot depth range, making for productive half day walleye fishing charters out of Dunkirk. While we occasionally navigate up to 20 miles to find the largest pods, most of our recent success has occurred within 10 miles of the port.
We are currently finding success with a summer walleye trolling strategy, utilizing downriggers and planer boards to cover water efficiently. The fish are aggressive, with many "eaters" in the 18 to 22-inch range being boated daily. For those booking a private Lake Erie walleye trolling trip, the early morning hours have offered the most consistent action, though the midday bite remains strong for our full day walleye fishing groups.
As we move further into the summer season, the offshore bite is expected to intensify. Our experienced walleye fishing guide and mate are currently seeing plenty of baitfish on the sonar, which suggests the trophy fish will remain in our local New York waters through September.
