Buy Your NY Fishing License: Fees, Exemptions, and Online Portals

Navigating the licensing requirements is the first step toward a successful outing on the water. Whether you are joining Fishunter Charters for a summer walleye hunt or a spring jigging session, having the correct documentation ensures your trip is legal and hassle-free.

Who Needs a License?

In New York State, everyone aged 16 and older is required to have a valid fishing license in their possession. This applies to both residents and visitors. If you are a parent or guardian bringing along younger anglers, you'll be glad to know that children under 16 fish for free and do not require any state licensing or registration.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

Since Fishunter Charters operates on Lake Erie, you will need a Freshwater Fishing License. While New York does have a "Recreational Marine Fishing Registry" for saltwater (Atlantic Ocean and coastal areas), Lake Erie is strictly a freshwater body. A standard freshwater license covers all your target species, including walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch.

2026 License Pricing

New York offers flexible options depending on the length of your stay. For travelers, the 1-day or 7-day options are typically the most cost-effective.

Special Exemptions and Reduced Rates

  • Seniors: New York residents aged 70 and older qualify for a reduced annual rate of $5.00.
  • Military Personnel: Active-duty NY residents stationed outside the state who are home on leave for 30 days or less can fish for free. Non-resident active-duty members stationed in NY for 30+ days qualify for resident pricing.
  • Legally Blind Residents: NY residents who are legally blind can obtain a free fishing license with a doctor's note.
  • Free Fishing Days: The NYSDEC occasionally designates "Free Fishing Weekends" where no license is required for anyone.

We recommend securing your license before arriving at the dock to maximize your time on the water.
